PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) is a popular thermoplastic that offers exceptional thermal stability, electrical properties, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength. However, it has some limitations such as low impact resistance, hydroscopicity, and poor flame-retardancy. To overcome these drawbacks, PBT can be modified in several ways to enhance its performance and widen its scope of applications.

Reinforcement Modification

Glass-fiber reinforced PBT (GF-PBT) is a widely used modified PBT that enhances its strength, rigidity, and toughness. Depending on the application, the fiber content can range from 10% to 50%, resulting in materials suitable for automotive, electronic, and power tool industries. Flame-retardant Modification

In the case of fire, PBT may release toxic gases and halogens, which could cause harm to humans and the environment. The resulting flame-retardant PBT (FR-PBT) provides excellent mechanical properties along with a high level of safety. Alloy Modification

The blend of PBT with other polymers like PET, ABS, or PC can result in alloys that combine the properties of both components.
