Application
The primary use of ground mica is as a caulk to fill and finish joints and defects in gypsum wallboard (drywall). Mica acts as a filler and extender, providing a smooth consistency, improving the compound's workability and providing crack resistance. In 2008, joint compounds accounted for 54% of dry-ground mica consumption. In the coating industry, mica powder is used as a pigment extender to promote suspension, reduce pulverization, resist shrinkage and shearing of coatings, increase water penetration resistance and weather resistance of coatings, and dilute the hue of colored pigments. Mica also promotes paint adhesion in water-based and oleoresin formulations.
The plastics industry uses dry mica as a filler and filler and as a lightweight insulating material to dampen sound and vibration, particularly in automotive parts. Mica is used as a reinforcement in automotive plastic dashboards and fenders to improve mechanical properties and increase dimensional stability, stiffness and strength. Mica-reinforced plastics also offer high thermal dimensional stability, low warpage, and the best surface properties of any filled plastic composite.
The rubber industry uses mica powder as an inert filler and release agent in the manufacture of molded rubber products such as tires and roofing materials. The plate-like texture acts as an anti-stick and anti-stick agent.
