Citrus aurantium, also known as Bitter Orange or Seville Orange, orange&mdashrefers to the citrus tree Citrus sinensis and its fruit. The orange is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin, possibly between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and tangerine (Citrus reticulata). It is a small tree, growing to about 10 m tall, with thorny shoots and evergreen leaves 4-10 cm long. Oranges originated in southeast Asia, in either India or modern day Pakistan, Vietnam or southern China. The fruit of Citrus sinensis is called sweet orangeto distinguish it from Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange. Neohesperidin Dihydrochacone NHDC is an sweetner with white or yellow white crystalline powder, the sweetness is about 1500-1800 times that of sucrose. The sweetening time is slightly later than saccharin sodium and far faster than that of glycyrrhizin (5:7:23s). The sweetness time of the three is 42:57:133s. In between, it is closer to sodium saccharin. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether and benzene. |
